Super again
Went and saw Superman Returns with Dad today. All in all, a good movie I think. The new Superman really does look a lot like Christopher Reeves, especially when he’s playing Kent. The new Lois doesn’t look a whole heck of a lot like the old Lois, although she does a good job. Kevin Spacey, however, does an awesome job with Lex Luthor. He looks almost exactly like Marlon Brando did. That was the really amazing part.
The most amazing part of the entire movie was the CGI. The graphics throughout the movie were simply spectacular. The cape is awesome, and all the crystals were awesome as well. I loved how they handled the light flitering in through the walls in the Fortress of Solitude. Also amazing was Jor-el’s voice. This is mainly amazing because instead of getting a new actor to read the lines, they pieced together the lines from recordings of the old Jor-el. They also pieced together images from the old movies to use on the crystal screens. That is some technical prowess.
One thing that I didn’t really like was the new costume. I liked how they weren’t using primary red or yellow anymore, but I didn’t like how dark the new colors were. I would have gone for something a little brighter, seeing as this is Superman and all and he’s supposed to be the light of hope for mankind. Also, his boots really annoyed me. They weren’t smooth at the toe or the heel but had these weird reinforcements on them that made them look like battle-boots or something. They annoyed me. The rest of the costume was good though, and true to the old costume.
In other news, I’ve switched over to using Flock instead of Firefox. This is mainly for the integrated Flickr uploader and blog poster. Also, since they now have mouse gestures migrated, I can browse just as easily in Flock as in Firefox. And I get all the cool doodads and whizbangs that Flock has.
Other other news has me diving into another start on a novel. I’m thinking I’ve got off on the right foot this time and will get through it. I like the story and I like my world and I have my three main characters well developed. I also have enough storylines thought up that will take me through four books. The storylines are even related and all that jazz. I am very excited and am hopeful.
More other news has me once again looking to get a domain name. Dreamhost looks to be my host of choice, although I am going to keep looking around for more hosts. The one thing I don’t like about Dreamhost is that they story MySQL databases on separate domains from your main site, so there is extra setup required when installing MySQL software. This isn’t a problem so much as it is an annoyance that I don’t want to deal with. Dreamhost however does seem to be the most attractive of all the hosts I’ve found. And they do have good reviews so I can be sure they won’t crap out like the last host I dealt with.
Other than that, the only news I have left to report is that I added another series to my anime collection. This one is called Avenger. It’s about a girl named Layla Ashley who is a retired delegate gladiator for Serena City, one of the new cities colonized on Mars. Resources on Mars are tight so the cities fight over them with gladiator battles to the death. Another problem the Martian population is having is that babies aren’t being born. The story is about Layla’s quest for revenge against a man named Volk, mayor of Volk City, who apparently killed her parents. She has a child with her named Nei who is supposed to somehow be the key to making birth possible again.
The anime was very shiny but the story was very disjointed. I guess that’s to be expected, especially from the creators of .hack//SIGN. I liked it on the whole though and am glad I bought it.
Thanks for the review on Superman. I haven’t seen it yet and I’m still iffy if I’ll go see it.
Good luck on your novel.
